SK-II is global beauty brand, built on science and innovation. They wanted an experiential retail experience that reflected these core pillars. The Future X experience pushed boundaries of the retail and beauty industries with a hyper-personalized shopping approach.
We created a store that adapted to new shopping behaviors, redefining the role of both product sales and beauty counselors. This personalized experience was seamless through use of technology, ultimately connecting visitors to product in a completely new way.
The store opened in Shanghai, China – the first of eight unique 'smart stores' designed for the brand.

The art direction for the experience married SK-II focus’ of beauty and technology. Working with graphic artist Ari Wenkle, we created rich visuals for use across all print and digital collateral.

The store opened in the summer of 2018, located in iconic Shanghai fashion destination K-11. We led all creative direction for the retail space - spanning industrial, digital, print, motion, lighting and sound design.
The experience begins with “The Art of You” - a large digital wall that reads guest’s facial expressions and movements. Each unique expression correlates different color schemes and energy movements, allowing people to generate their own personal art piece.
Following entry were a series of stations where visitors could scan their skin – receiving a skin age score based on measurements across five skin dimensions – and get personalized skincare recommendations.
At the end of the store experience were highly interactive retail tables built from a combination of cameras, projection mapping, and a motion-sensing Kinect suspended from the ceiling. Visitors could explore the different SK-II products in an incredibly immersive way and add to cart with just a wave of the hand.
The store was met with praise, garnering a great deal of press for SK-II across Asia and beyond and elevating SK-II to the forefront of technological innovation in beauty.
